Marketing is the essential part of the entire process of management.They are not separate or independent functions.Marketing is not restricted to just buying and selling,or dealing with imports and exports; instead,it is a threesided function,and each side is closely involved in the management process.Marketing research and product development are one side.Advertising and sales promotion are another; and sales services and administration are the third.The concept of management functions operates in each of these areas,and effective management in each must be coordinated with effective overall management to make the entire process successful.

Marketing research is not the same thing as market research.Market research is an analysis of a specific market.For example,how many potential customers there are and where they're located.Marketing research is much broader than that and refers to many functions of sales which,to be more specific,can be defined as gathering,recording and analysing all facts about problems related to merchandising,including product planning,transport,services and communication,too.

In the merchandising function,production plays a major role.There are very few products which will continue to be marketable over a long period of time without undergoing changes.This is where the function of research and development become important.Successful merchandising means that companies must stay abreast of changing markets and changing products.This is the essential role of research and development or product improvement.

Selecting and establishing the appropriate marketing channels in the beginning is vital.Once established,a good marketing channel will continue to function properly without the need for constant supervision.Thus advanced planning becomes important,especially when we consider both the time and quantity inputs which will be necessary to prime the marketing channel.A properly developed marketing channel will ensure the continuous flow of the merchandise from producer to consumer with the minimum of problems or what we would call a bottleneck.
