TheX-Prizewincertainlychangedtheworld'sperceptionofcommercialspaceflightandtherewasarapidinfluxofmoneyintoallkindsofnewventures.Surprisingly,evenNASAstartedworkingwiththesespaceentrepreneurs.PresidentBushhadannouncedinJanuary2005hewantedNASAtosendpeoplebacktothemoonby2020andfromthereontoMars.SpurredbythesuccessofSpaceShipOneandtheallureofbeingabletoworkonaprojectwithouttheusualrestrictivebudgetaryandadministrativeconstraints,NASAannouncedthatitwouldspend$3milliononadesignstudytocomeupwithideasforhowthenextgenerationspaceshipstoreturntothemoonshouldbeconfigured.

NASA'sgrowingopennesstoworkingwithprivatecompanieswasfurthersignaledinaspeechgivenbyNASA'snewlyappointedadministratorMikeGriffininJune2005whenheannouncedNASAintend-edtofundthedevelopmentofcommercialspaceshipstosupplytheInternationalSpaceStationwithcargoandcrew.ThefactthatNASAwouldbuyridesontheseflightsratherthantryingtodevelopandownthemoutrightwasasignificantpoint.InJanuary2006,NASAreleaseditsformalrequestsforproposalsundertheauspicesofanewprogramcalledCommercialOrbitalTransportationServices.
