Rutansolvedtherocketenginesideoftheequationfirst,evenbeforehehadfoundsomeonetoactuallyfinanceconstruction.BurtRutanlookedinitiallyatusingaliquid-fueledrocketenginethesameaswasusedbyNasatolaunchtheApollospacemissions,buthewasconcernedaboutthecomplexityofthoseenginesandtheinherentdangersinvolved.AnotheroptionwastouseasolidfuelrocketengineofthetypeNASAusestolaunchthespaceshuttles.Theseenginesgeneratelessboostthantheirliquid-fueledcounterparts,buttheyaresafertousebecausetheirfuelandoxidizerareinjectedduringthemanufacturingprocessmakinglauncheseasier.Theonlypotentialdisadvantageofsolid-fueledrocketenginesisoncetheyarelit,theycannotbeshutdownorthrottledback.Theenginehastoburnthroughallitsavail-ablefuelwhichmightbeanissueifaproblemariseselsewhereinthespacecraft.

Thethirdalternativewastouseahybridrocketengine.Hybridsuseasolidfuelandeitheraliquidorgaseousoxidizer.Whentheoxidizerflows,therocketenginegeneratesthrust.Iftheflowoftheoxidizeristurnedoff,theengineshutsdown.Hybridsarelessefficientthaneitherpureliquid-fueledorsolid-fueledrocketenginesbutthefacthybridscanbethrottledbackwasahugepositive.Afterlookingatafewalternatives,Rutandecidedtogowithahybridrocketengineforhisnewspaceshipdesign.
