一 秦王與太子的暗戰
大業七年（公元611年），隋煬帝楊廣東征高麗遭遇慘敗，緊接著又在大業九年、十年連續發起遠征，最後隻換來高麗王高元徒有虛名的一份降表，沒有取得任何實質利益。
楊廣三征高麗，每次動用軍隊都達一百餘萬人，耗盡了民脂民膏，也徹底耗盡了隋朝的國力。一度繁榮強大的隋帝國，就這樣被窮兵黷武的楊廣推進了萬劫不複的深淵。《隋書》稱，大業末年，“政刑馳紊，賄貨公行”，“六軍不息，百役繁興；行者不歸，居者失業；人餓相食，邑落為墟”，“流血成川澤，死人如亂麻；炊者不及析骸，食者不遑易子……”《舊唐書》稱：“萬戶則城郭空虛，千裏則煙火斷滅。”
於是，水深火熱的黎民百姓不得不揭竿而起，剛剛統一不久的隋帝國再度分崩離析。
大業十三年（公元617年）五月，太原留守李淵自晉陽（今太原西南晉源鎮）起兵，自號大將軍，以裴寂為長史，劉文靜為司馬，以長子李建成、次子李世民分領左右三軍，先後攻克西河（今山西汾陽市）、霍邑（今山西霍縣）、臨汾（今山西臨汾市）、韓城，一路勢如破竹、所向披靡，於大業十三年十一月攻陷隋都長安。
隨後，李淵擁立年僅十三歲的代王楊侑為帝，自封為都督中外諸軍事的持節大都督、大丞相、尚書令、進封唐王。
大業十四年（公元618年）三月，隋煬帝楊廣在江都的別宮中被宇文化及等人誅殺。同年五月，唐王李淵在長安稱帝，改元武德，立李建成為太子，封李世民為秦王。
李淵雖然在關中稱帝，但是各方的割據勢力仍然十分強大，遍滿天下的兵燹戰火一刻也不曾停止燃燒。初生的大唐王朝立刻踏上了掃蕩群雄、統一宇內的征途。
武德元年（公元618年）十一月，唐朝平定薛仁杲（薛舉之子），占據隴右；同年，郭子和、李密歸降。
武德二年（公元619年），平定李軌，占據河西五郡。
武德三年（公元620年），大破宋金剛與劉武周，克複並州。
武德四年（公元621年），俘竇建德，占據河北；降王世充，占據河南；俘蕭銑，占據荊州。
武德五年（公元622年），破劉黑闥，占據山東；殺李子通，降杜伏威，滅林士弘，占據江南。
武德六年（公元623年），討平徐圓朗之叛。
武德七年（公元624年），殺高開道，占據幽州。
至此，四方群雄皆滅，天下複歸一統。
自從李淵晉陽起兵之後，有一個人始終在第一線上浴血奮戰，八年中馬不停蹄地東征西討，為大唐王朝的建立和鞏固立下了赫赫功勳。
他就是秦王李世民。
武德四年十月，高祖李淵為表彰李世民平定竇建德與王世充之功，拜其為“天策上將”，位在諸王公之上，並兼領司徒、陝東道大行台、尚書令。
在多年的南征北戰中，由於李世民的慧眼識英與知人善任，天下的名士與英雄悉數入其彀中。文臣有杜如晦、房玄齡、孔穎達、許敬宗等人，號稱“十八學士”；武將有尉遲敬德、秦叔寶、程知節、段誌玄等人。秦王府上精英薈萃、人才濟濟，使李世民如虎添翼。
武德五年，李世民破劉黑闥後，又領左右十二衛大將軍，總握全國兵權，一時間威震朝野、勢傾天下。
正當秦王李世民如日中天的時候，有一個人的眼裏正噴射著嫉妒和憤怒的火焰。
他就是太子李建成。
李淵共有二十二子，其原配皇後竇氏生四子：長子李建成為太子，次子李世民為秦王，三子李元霸早亡，四子李元吉為齊王。
從晉陽起兵到攻克長安，李建成與李世民二人並駕齊驅，所立戰功不相上下，但在第二階段的統一戰爭中，李世民無疑是首功之人。所以，早在武德元年十二月李世民平定薛舉父子之後，李建成就已經“疾秦王世民功高，頗相猜忌”了。當時的禮部尚書兼太子詹事李綱，就曾因太子“疏骨肉”而對他進行勸諫。到武德三年平定劉武周、武德四年又消滅竇建德與王世充這兩大勢力之後，李世民的功績與聲望更是遠遠超越了太子。而且，李世民誌在天下的政治抱負也逐漸露出了端倪。
這，不能不讓李建成感到嚴重的威脅和深深的憂懼。
武德五年，未平定劉黑闥之前，太子洗馬魏征就跟太子當麵挑明了這層利害關係。他說：“秦王功蓋天下，中外歸心；殿下但以年長位居東宮，無大功以鎮服海內。而今劉黑闥逃亡所餘，手下不過萬人，物資糧草匱乏，若以大軍臨之，其勢定如摧枯拉朽。殿下應該親自出擊以取功名，進而結納山東豪傑，庶可鞏固地位！”
李建成深以為然，立即向高祖請戰，隨後與齊王李元吉一同出征討平了劉黑闥。此舉或多或少給東宮掙回了一些麵子。更為重要的是，在這次結伴出征後，太子和齊王緊密團結在一起，共同把矛頭指向了秦王。
在李淵父子打天下的過程中，李建成、李世民和李元吉各自擁兵，形成了三大集團勢力。當東宮與秦王的矛盾日益尖銳且漸趨公開化的時候，齊王李元吉究竟站在誰的一邊就顯得至關重要了。
齊王最終選擇了東宮。
最主要的原因，是齊王李元吉同樣懷有個人的政治野心。
李世民圖謀取代儲君，而李元吉也在夢想繼承皇位。假如擁戴威望卓著、戰功顯赫的李世民奪嫡繼位，那他李元吉永遠也別想有出頭之日；而如果是幫助東宮翦除秦王，然後回頭再除掉太子，在李元吉看來則是易如反掌之事。
所以，齊王義無反顧地靠向了太子——靠向了他心目中的這副跳板。
太子和齊王開始並肩戰鬥了。
為了擴大統一戰線，他們又千方百計地和高祖的嬪妃們走到了一起。
這些嬪妃為了鞏固地位並常保富貴，自然也願意與太子結盟。更何況，在她們眼中，李世民本來就是一個不近情理之人。早在武德四年李世民平定東都洛陽時，高祖就特意讓她們去挑一些前朝留下的寶貝。嬪妃們興衝衝地趕到洛陽，秦王卻板著麵孔說：“你們來晚了，寶物都登記上繳了！”
從那一刻起，她們就發誓總有一天要讓他好看。所以，嬪妃們和太子一拍即合。
