KThestudieshadallusedmoreorlessthesamemethodology,namelyphotographingpeopleandaskingthemtodoIQtests,thenshowingthephotographstootherpeopleandaskingthesecondlottoranktheintelligenceofthefirstlot.Theresultssuggestedthatpeoplegetsuchjudgmentsrightoftenenoughtobesignificant.Theresearchersandtheircolleaguesthencarriedouttheirownexperiment,withtheaddedtwistofdividingtheirsubjectsupbyage.LTheresultsofthatweresurprising.Theyfoundthatthefacesofchildrenandadultsofmiddlingyearsseemedtogiveawayintelligence,whilethoseofteenagersandtheelderlydidnot.Thatissurprisingbecauseface-readingofthissortmustsurelybeimportantinmateselection,andtheteenageyearsarethetimewhensuchselectionislikelytobemostintense—though,conversely,theyarealsothetimewhenevolutionwillbeworkinghardesttocoverupanydeficiencies(缺陷),andthehormone-drivenchangestakingplaceduringpuberty(青春期)mightprovidethematerialneededtodothat.Nevertheless,theaccumulatingevidencesuggeststhatphysicalcharacteristicsdogivecluesaboutintelligence,thatsuchcluesarepickedupbyotherpeople,andthatthesecluesarealso674新時代大學進階英語長篇閱讀4associatedwithbeauty.Andotherworkalsosuggeststhatthismatters.

OWhattheseresultssuggestisatwo-foldprocess.Thereisafeedbackloopbetweenbiologyandthesocialenvironmentthatgivestothosewhohave,andtakesfromthosewhohavenot.Thishappensbecausebeautyisarealmarkerforother,underlyingcharacteristicssuchashealth,goodgenesandintelligence.Itthereforemakesbiologicalsenseforpeopletopreferbeautifulfriendsandlovers.Givenallthis,itishardlysurprisingthatthecosmeticsindustryhasglobalsalesof$280billion.
