通過多國合作，和平號空間站曾經接待過多國的宇航員（astronaut）。值得一提的是和平號航天飛機計劃，在此期間美國的航天飛機共拜訪空間站11次，帶來補給以及乘員替換。和平號由多個模塊在軌道上組裝而成，首個模塊於1986年2月19日發射升空，其後至1996年的十年時間之中，其他多個模塊相繼升空。
2000年年底，俄羅斯聯邦航天局（Russian federal space agency，簡稱RFSA）因和平號部件老化且缺乏維修經費，決定將其墜毀。和平號最終於2001年3月23日墜入地球大氣層，碎片落入南太平洋海域中。和平號的研究任務今後由國際太空站所取代。
