在學術上，沙因是美國心理學協會（American Psychological Association）會員，管理學會（Academy of Management）會員。由於他一度是國際原子能機構的管理顧問，所以就“順便”加入了核能運轉協會（Institute for Nuclear Power Operations），並擔任該協會的董事顧問。他還是《映像》（Reflections）雜誌的創始人，這本雜誌關注組織學習，關注領導發展的應用藝術。學術之外，沙因的愛好十分廣泛。作為動物保護者之一，他是馬薩諸塞州奧杜邦協會（Massachusetts Audubon Society）的董事，這個協會是以鳥類學家奧杜邦（J. Audubon，1785-1851）的名字命名的全美鳥類保護的民間組織。他還是波士頓抒情歌劇團（Boston Lyric Opera）的董事。
沙因的成就為他贏得了諸多榮譽。2000年，他獲得美國培訓經理協會的“職場學習與績效”終身成就獎（Lifetime Achievement Award in Workplace Learning and Performance of the American Society of Training and Development）；同年，獲得管理學會職業生涯分會頒發的埃弗裏特？切林頓？休斯職業生涯獎（Everett Cherington Hughes Award for Career Scholarship，Careers Division of the Academy of Management）；2002年，獲得波士頓大學管理學院的瑪麗恩？吉斯拉森高級管理人員領導力開發獎（Marion Gislason Award for Leadership in Executive Development，Boston University School of Management Executive Development Roundtable），還獲得戈登·哈德威克獎（Gordon Hardwick Award）、社會科學委員會輔助研究獎（Social Science Council Auxiliary Research Award）、美國發展訓練協會頒發的組織發展傑出貢獻獎（ASTD Award for Outstanding Contribution to Organizational Development）。
