第一節環境保護

一、減少浪費

(一)減少浪費

The first "R" stands for "reduce". Students can reduce waste and limit theirenergy usage on campus in many ways. To begin with, they can avoid printingdocuments when a hard copy is not required. For essays and other documents thatdo need to be printed, students can use double-sided as opposed to single-sidedprinting. Furthermore, electricity usage can be limited by turning off computersbefore going to sleep and remembering to turn off the lights before leaving aroom. Finally, students can decrease their water usage by taking showers insteadof baths and remembering to turn the tap off while brushing their teeth.

第一個“R”代表“reduce",即減少浪費。在校園裏,學生可以在很多方麵減少浪費,限製能源消耗。首先,不打印無需硬拷貝的文檔。對於論文和其他確實需要打印的文檔,學生們可以使用雙麵打印來代替單麵打印。此外,睡前關電腦、離開房間時記得關燈可以限製用電量。最後,用淋浴代替盆浴、刷牙時記得關掉水龍頭,也可以減少用水量。

(二)重複使用

The second of the three Rs is "reuse". Many products commonly used on collegecampuses, such as knives, spoons and chopsticks, are available in bothsingle-use and reusable forms. Whenever possible, students should choosereusable products over disposable ones. In addition, some of the products thatare frequently used by students have reusable components. Students can purchaserefillable ink cartridges for their printers, buy refillable pens, use amechanical pencil instead of the traditional kind, and carry a flask or thermosinstead of buying bottled water.

環保3R中第二個“R”是“reuse”。許多大學校園裏用的如小刀、勺子、筷子等普通用品,既有一次性的也有可反複使用的。隻要有可能,學生應該選用可反複使用的產品而不要用一次性產品。另外,學生經常使用的物品中有些也可重複使用。學生可以購買可填充的打印機墨盒,購買可重複添加墨水的鋼筆,用自動鉛筆代替普通鉛筆,攜帶小水瓶或暖瓶而不去購買瓶裝水。

(三)回收利用

The third "R" stands for "recycle". With recycling bins placed in variouslocations across many campuses, it is easier than ever before for students torecycle. Wasteful practices such as throwing away empty bottles or newspapersshould be avoided. Moreover, students must be careful not to throw a recyclableitem in the wrong slot. Last but not least, students should make an effort tobuy products with packaging that is both recyclable and made fromenvironmentally-friendly materials.

第三個“R”代表“recycle”。在很多校園裏到處都有垃圾回收箱,對學生來說回收利用比以往任何時候都要容易得多。要避免諸如扔掉空瓶或報紙等浪費行為。此外,學生一定要注意不要把可回收利用的物品扔錯了地方。最後但同樣重要的是,學生應該盡量買那些帶有可循環包裝以及用環保型材料製作的物品。

二、能源短缺

(一)能源現狀

State leaders around the world have realized and acknowledged that we are likelyto face a global energy shortage over the next few decades. The price of crudeoil is at an all-time high and demand for the petroleum continues to soar,especially in emerging economies like China and India. I believe governments canimplement a number of practices to ease impending energy shortages. Theseinclude the promotion of energy-efficient practices, restrictions on energy use,and the provision of incentives for alternative energy.
