THE Rumanian Fairy Tales which appear now for the first time in an English translation form only a small portion of the vast treasure of tales and legends known and told in Rumania。Those included in this volume have been taken mostly from the collections of Stancescu, Ispirescu, Ion Creanga and others。They have been selected not only for their internal beauty and for being characteristically Rumanian, but also because they form a distinct addition to the literature of the Folk Tales of the world。They are almost unique inasmuch as scarcely any parallels to them can be found elsewhere。

I have endeavoured in my translation not only as far as possible to follow the original closely, but also to retain the terseness and simplicity of style and the beauty of the imagery。I hope they will meet with the same hearty welcome from English readers as they have enjoyed for a long time past in their own country。
