1）漢語有四個聲調，聲調不同，漢字及意義都會不同，如“媽”（mā）“麻”（má）“馬”（mǎ）“罵”（mà）。
2）有的字在使用中要變調，兩個三聲在一起變成二聲和三聲，如：nǐ hǎo,讀作“ní hǎo”。
3）有的雙音節詞的詞尾發音時要變輕聲，如：rèn shi。Note:
1）There are four tones in Chinese.Depending on their tones,two words with identical consonants and vowels can have completely different meanings,e.g.“媽”（mā,mom）,“麻”（má,sesame）,“馬”（mǎ,horse）,and“罵”（mà,to scold）.
2）When two thirdtoned characters are combined to form a word,the first one needs to be pronounced in second tone,e.g.“nǐ hǎo”is read as“ní hǎo”.
3）Sometimes the suffix of a twosyllable word,such as“shí”in“rèn shi”,needs to be pronounced as a light tone unstressed syllable pronounced without its original pitch in Chinese pronunciation.
