自從吳稚暉先生提出土八股洋八股的名稱以來，大家一直沿用，不曾發生過疑問，因為這兩種東西確實存在，現在給他分類正名，覺得更是明了了。但是我有時不免心裏納悶，這兩個名稱雖好，究竟還是諢名，他們的真姓名該是什麼。土八股我知道即是經義，以做成散文賦似的八對股得名，可是洋八股呢，這在中國舊名詞裏叫做什麼的呢？無意之中，忽然想到，真是——踏破鐵鞋無覓處，得來全不費工夫，原來這洋八股的本名就隻是策論。頂好的證據是，前清從前考試取士用八股文，後來維新了要講洋務的時候改用策論，二者同是製藝或功令文，而有新舊之別，亦即是土洋之異矣。不過這個證據還是隨後想到的，最初使我得到這新發見的是別人的偶然一句閑話。我翻閱馮班的《鈍吟雜錄》，卷一家戒上有一則，其上半雲：
