本書語料庫主要來自近幾年公開發表的SCI期刊,如the New England Journal of Medicine, Cell, Science, Nature, Lancet等知名醫學期刊。

Writing is a kind of academic forms. Many second language (L2) graduates and undergraduates, after years of ESL training, often fail to recognize and appropriately use the conventions and features of academic written prose (Hinkel, 2004). Generally they employ largely conversational linguistic features even in their academic writings. So the teaching and learning of academic writing are crucial to L2 students, especially postgraduates of medical majors.
1.1Introduction to written and spoken genres
A genre is the subject matter or category that writers use, and is generally in terms of spoken and written forms, as listed in Table 11. A genre is word choices and usages and vital to EFL (English as a Foreign Language) and academic writing.

[Sample 1]
My dad says these are the best days of my life—but I am not so sure! You know, Ive got lots of work to do and theres not much time really. I also play football for the school team and we have to do training three nights a week.
[Sample 2]
The study was conducted in three successive stages: first, we investigated the influence of
climate on the temporal variation of AI incidence by measuring the correlation between AI incidence and climate variables in regions of the country characterized by different climates. Then, in order to investigate whether other factors could explain AI seasonality, we used a finite mixture mode to identify periods of time during which AIO frequency increased. Finally, we tested the influence of other factors using stochastic compartment modeling (Delabouglise et al., 2017).
[Analysis]
The two samples are different in style: Sample 1 is spoken while Sample 2 is written. First, the sentence type is different. The three sentences in Sample 1 are compound in structure (並列句) with coordinate conjunctions like “but”, “and”. Second, they are also different in topics (話題): pronouns as topic in Sample 1 like “I”, “my” and “we” (as topics of life activities), content as topic in Sample 2 like “study”, and “we” (as topics of scientific papers). Therefore, Sample 1 is subjective and Sample 2 is objective.
1.2The conventions of academic
English lexis choices
Academic English writing achieves its formality through the use of specialist vocabulary, impersonal voice, and the ways that ideas get packed into relatively few words. “These features of academic writing break down into three key areas: high lexical density, high nominal style, impersonal constructions.”(Hyland, 2006) It is vital and significant to master important disciplinary genres and the competence of their users in various related fields. (Hyland, 2006) Vocabulary approach is a common core, a set of language forms or skills in academic English writing.
