一九八五年開始發表作品，有小說、評論、報告文學四百餘萬字麵世。主要作品有：《時代三部曲》、（《北方城郭》、《突出重圍》、《英雄時代》）、中篇小說集《蒼茫冬日》等。曾獲中宣部“五個一工程獎”、首屆馮牧文學獎、國家圖書獎提名獎、解放軍文藝獎、中國圖書獎、飛天獎、金鷹獎、四川省文學獎等獎項。作品分別列為建國五十周年和建黨八十周年十部獻禮書之一。
