Uhe domination of capitalism, "knowledge ey" has bee the most repeated slogan of govers. heless, here the "knowledge" is always defined by short-term eic profitability, which subjects academia to market or political power, and the critical responsibility of college is accly lost.

In the ret years, the inflating number of colleges in Taiwan has degraded the academic quality. Moreover, the spirit of indepe rearch is also threatened by the "quantified" and "marketized" asssment employed by the authority of education. At the critical point of history, only if we maintaiegrity and independence of education, the erosion of market power be prevented, and the social value be re-established.

20世紀末與21世紀初的台灣高等教育,正處於曆史的漩渦之中。這股曆史的漩渦由國內政治發展與國際高等教育的新形勢彙流相激相蕩而形成,因果相逐,關係至為複雜。最近20年來,身處台灣曆史激流之中的高等教育工作者,身心都經曆並體驗了前蘇聯時代著名詩人、曾獲諾貝爾文學獎但慘遭迫害的巴斯特那克(Boris L. Pasternak, 1890-1960)在《齊瓦哥醫生》這部小說中所說的,我們每個人都經曆了兩次革命,一次是與他人共有的,一次是屬於自己的。近20年來台灣的大學教師,都經曆了一場教育的“寧靜革命”的風暴。在這場曆史風暴之中,每個人都經曆他自己獨有的,以及與他人共有的心路曆程。在風暴過後,未來高等教育這艘大船,將航向何方?這是身為船長的大學校長,以及作為水手的教師,心中時時刻刻縈懷的重大問題。
