《D阪殺人事件》首次出場
通過對形象的比較，名偵探明智小五郎與那些因解決困難事件而聲名大噪的本格派偵探截然不同。
例如，金田一耕助因在《本陣殺人事件》、《獄門島》中的功績受到肯定而聞名；而神津恭介也通過在《刺青殺人事件》及《成吉思汗的秘密》中的推理，建構起他作為名偵探的形象。這些作品都是橫溝正史或高木彬光不可或缺的傑作組成部分。
然而，明智小五郎在《D阪殺人事件》、《心理測驗》、《天花板上的散步者》等精致短篇中或許能表現出其作為名偵探的一麵，但他的形象主要還是通過通俗長篇推理小說才逐漸豐滿起來的，這已是不爭的事實。從亂步的代表作《帶著貼畫旅行的人》、《鏡地獄》中完全不見明智小五郎出場來看，這或許正是最有力的證明吧！
因此，說得極端一點兒，明智小五郎的名偵探形象，是在和少年小說《怪人二十麵相》中，與對手無窮無盡鬥爭的過程中才不斷被塑造並顯現出來的，我想這點是不言自明的事，無須多言。
因此本文將把從《D阪殺人事件》到《怪人二十麵相》之間，明智小五郎形象變化的軌跡來做一詳盡說明。
明智小五郎第一次出場是在大正十四年發表的《D阪殺人事件》中。由該作品中的描寫來看，或許可形容為“相當爽朗的出場”，隻是，在《D阪殺人事件》中的明智小五郎比起日後呈現出的青年紳士的爽朗形象，卻又有著極大的差異。
在《D阪殺人事件》故事裏描寫他“根本是個怪人，頭腦似乎相當聰明”，可說是很適合成為推理小說中的角色。平常總是“穿著他最愛的粗條紋浴衣，搖晃著肩膀從窗外經過，我一眼就能認出他，是因為他擺動肩膀的幅度實在太大”。明智小五郎租在煙草鋪二樓，“四張半榻榻米大小的地板上堆滿了書。隻有中間部位可見一小塊空出來的榻榻米，其餘都是書、書、書，到處是由書堆砌而成的小山”的房間裏。他“算是一個沒有固定職業的遊民”，自稱“研究的是人類”，並且“對於犯罪或尋找真相有著異於常人的興趣及驚人的豐富知識”。
年齡“不超過二十五歲。體形偏瘦，如前所述，他走路時有個甩動肩膀的怪毛病，絕非類似豪傑大俠之類的動作，若以較耐人尋味的方式比喻，可以聯想一下那位單手殘疾的說書人神田伯龍的走路姿勢。說到伯龍，明智從長相到聲音都跟他一模一樣——（中略）雖稱不上美男子，但給人一種親近感，且看起來很睿智的長相即可——隻不過，明智的頭發較長，蓬亂毛躁糾結成團，跟人說話時，他還會習慣性地用手指把那原本亂糟糟的頭發抓得更亂。至於服裝，他向來不講究，棉質和服上係一條皺巴巴的兵兒帶”，以上就是在本篇作品中，亂步對明智小五郎所做的描寫。
他的推理方式是所謂的“表麵的物證隨著解釋的角度和方式的不同，會出現全然不同的結果。最好的偵探法就是由心理層麵透視人的內在”的心理推理法。明智靠著這種方式成功地解決了不少案件。
《心理測驗》案發的時間是在《D阪殺人事件》之後數年，明智在這段期間“經手了許多難以解決的犯罪事件，並展現了其特殊的推理才能。不僅是專家，一般社會大眾也非常認同他的才能”。當然，他此時已不再是個書生。《黑手組》發表於《新青年》的大正十四年三月號，當中有一篇《心理測驗》，不過他出現在《黑手組》中時，仍然住在煙草鋪的二樓。
後來他在《幽靈》、《天花板上的散步者》中出場，但這幾篇作品並未對他進行過特別深入的描寫，由此也可以看出江戶川亂步原本並沒有長期經營這位名偵探的打算。由於《D阪殺人事件》頗受好評，江戶川亂步在《心理測驗》以後亦讓他繼續出場。但在亂步心中，此時明智小五郎確切的形象或許尚未成形吧！
作家甲賀三郎曾於《新青年》大正十五年二月號中，以本名春田能為投稿了一篇《明智小五郎的印象》。文中斷定明智是個五短身材、脖子粗短的駑鈍男子。該篇是理解當時文壇對明智小五郎的評價與印象的絕佳素材，收錄在《幻影城》增刊版——《江戶川亂步的世界》裏，有興趣的讀者可以此作為參考。
與文代夫人的邂逅
初期的短篇寫作遇到瓶頸後，江戶川亂步轉而往長篇通俗推理發展。但具有諷刺意味的是，推理小說家江戶川亂步的聲名鵲起反而是在發表了數篇長篇以後開始的。與此同時，他筆下的明智小五郎的形象也隨之發生大幅變化。
《蜘蛛男》連載於《講談俱樂部》雜誌昭和四年八月號至第二年的六月號中。
在《蜘蛛男》裏，明智解決了活人手臂懸掛在百貨公司假模特身上的一寸法師怪事後，作者聲稱他“遠渡重洋到海外，聽說他經由中國抵達印度，從出國至今已過三年了”。
當他回國後，突然現身在警視總監辦公室時，已非過去那個高級遊民明智小五郎，而是“立領白西裝配上白皮鞋，打扮完全不像日本人”的紳士。在這部作品中，明智喬裝成老人，表現出他喬裝術高明的一麵。
明智在被畔柳博士舉槍威脅的情況下，竟能夠若無其事地嘲笑對方子彈早已被他取出的橋段，這個手法之後也經常用在與怪人二十麵相的對決中，這可說是令人印象深刻的經典場麵。
在這次事件中，與明智小五郎搭檔的是警視廳的波越警部。連載於《國王》雜誌昭和五年九月號至昭和六年十月號的《黃金假麵》中，波越警部“仿佛忘記剛經曆過的失策的懊惱，頗為得意地介紹這位聲名遠播的朋友”，由此可見他對明智的崇敬。
通常警察與私家偵探多處於水火不容的狀況中，但明智小五郎與警視廳的關係一向很好，這也可說是明智受到眾人喜愛的實例之一吧！
明智小五郎在追蹤黃金假麵的過程中，曾隱約感覺自己追查的是替身，便佯裝身體不適而退出搜查行動，改交由波越警部全權追蹤，這表現出他亦有機靈狡詐的一麵。
在此，我想順便談談明智住所的變遷。
首次出場時，江戶川亂步把他安排在煙草鋪的二樓。到了《蜘蛛男》就住到飯店了。之後在《黃金假麵》中，他“放棄不經濟的飯店生活，搬來這處公寓，對於單身的他來說，比起獨門獨院的房子，還是住在公寓比較自在、方便。他租的是麵向大馬路的二樓兩室一廳的公寓，其中一間約有七張榻榻米大小，可以同時當做客廳兼書房，另一間較小的索性就當做臥房”。
