Themostimportantthinghelearnedinschoolwashowtocommunicate.Helearnthowtowriteclearly,speakinpublicandhowtoincreasehisvocabulary.Joiningthedebatingteamwasagreatmove,asittaughthowtoexpressideaswellandhowtothinkonyourfeet.

Whilerecoveringfromaboutofrheumaticfever,Leestartedreadingbooks.Thissoonbecameapassionforreadingeverythinghecouldgethishandson.Thishadagoodeffectonschoolgradesandhegraduatednearthetopofallhishigh schoolclasses.Extracurricularactivitiesincludedbigbandmusic,dramaclub,debatingteams,Latinclub,baseball,politicsandplyingthetenorsax.

LeewasinthemiddleofhisseniorhighschoolyearwhenJapanattackedPearlHarbor.Hecouldn'twaittojoinupbuthewasclassifiedasmedicallydeferredduetohisboutofRheumaticfever.Mostofhisclassmateswerecalledup,however,andmanyofthemdied.Leefeltdisgracedandasecond-classcitizen.Heburiedhisheadinhisbooks.

LeedecidedtogointoengineeringandafterbeingturneddownbyPurdueUniversity,hewenttoLehighUniversityinBethlehem,Pennsylvania(abouthalfanhour'sdrivefromhisfamilyhomeAllentown)。
