With equal passion I have sought knowledge. I have wished to uand the hearts of men. I have wished to know why the stars shine. And I have tried to apprehend the Pythagorean power... A little of this, but not much, I have achieved.
Love and knowledge, so far as they were possible, led upward toward the heavens. But ality brought me back to earth. Echoes of cries of pain reverberate in my heart. Children in famine, victims tortured by oppressors, helpless old people a hated burden to their sons, and the whole world of loneliness, poverty, and pain make a mockery of what human life should be. I long to alleviate the evil, but I ot, and I too suffer.
This has been my life. I have found it worth living, and would gladly live it again if the ce were offered me.
我以同樣的熱忱追求著知識，我一直希望了解人類的心靈，我一直想知道星星為什麼會閃爍，我企圖了解畢達哥拉斯的能力……這當中的一點點，並不多，但我得到了。
愛與知識，在它們能力範圍內，能引導我們上天堂；不過憾事總是讓我回到現實生活。痛苦哭聲的回響在我心中回蕩，饑餓的兒童、遭到暴虐、迫害的受難者、無助的老人成為兒子們厭惡的負擔、以及全世界的孤寂、貧窮與痛苦使人類生活成為一個笑話。我期盼減輕厄運，但是我不能，我也同樣受苦。
這就是我的生活。我發現它值得一活，而且如果給我機會的話，我樂於再活一次。
