Hollywoodsuggestsglamor,aplacewheretheyoungstar—struckteenagerscould,withabitofluck,fulfilltheirdreams.Hollywoodsug—gestsluxurioushouseswithvastpalm—fringedswimmingpools,cocktailbarsandfurnishingsfitforamillionaire.Andthebigmoviestarsweremillionaires.Manyspenttheirfortunesonyachts,RollsRoycesanddia—monds.Afewofthemlosttheirglamorquitesuddenlyandwereleftwithnothingbutemptinessandcolossaldebts.MovieswerefirstmadeinHollywoodbefi3reWorldWarI.Thecon—stantsunshineandmildclimateofsouthernCalifomiamadeitanidealsiteforshootingmotionpictures.Hollywood’sfameandfo~unereacheditspeakinthe1930sand1940s,thegoldendaysoftheblackandwhitemovies.Mostofthefamousmotionpicturescorporationsofthosedays,Metro—Goldwyn—Mayer,ColumbiaandWarnerBrothersarestillverymuchinbusinessandgreatstarslikeGretaGarbo,MarlenDietrich,CharlesCharplin,GaryCooper,andmanyothel’besides,havebecomeim—mortal.Inthosedays,Hollywoodwaslikeamagnet,drawingambitiousyoungmenandwomenfromallovertheworld.MostofthemhadonlytheirgoodlookstOrecommendthemandhad130actingexperience--ora—bility--whatsoever.Occasionallytheygotjobs,iftheywereluckyenoughtObenoticed.GaryCooperwasoneofthefewwhowasnoticed.HeStar-servedtheircustomerstheytossedtheirheadsandswungtheirhips,ho—pingtoattracttheattentionsofsomeimportantpersonconnectedwiththemovies.Mostofthemhopedinvain.Asforthestarsthemselves,theywereheldonatightreinbythestu—diochiefswhocouldmakeandbreakallbutstarswithreallybigappeal.Thestarswere“persuaded”tosignseven—yearcontracts.duringwhichtimethestudiobuiltuptheirimages.Undertheircontractsthestarsdidnothavetherighttochoosetheirparts.Theirstudiosdecidedeverything.NocountintheworldhasdevelopedSOexpertlytheskillofadver—tisingastheAmericans.Theyadvertiseeverything,fromicecreamtocandidateforthePresidency.TheHollywoodstudios,bymeansofadver—tising,turnedstarletsintosuperstars.Manystudioschiefsweretyrants,de—terminedtogettheirownwayatallcosts,nomatterhowunscrupulousStarswereoftentypecastandifheorsheappealedtothepublicasalover,thenheorshealwaysplayedthepartofalover.Astarwhowasahitasacowboyorabadguy,gotthesamekindofroleagainandagain.Therewaslittlearguing.“Youaretheperfectdumbblond,baby,andthat’Showyouaregoingtostay,”theywouldsay.Theyeventriedtointerfereintheirstarsprivatelives:“No,sugar!Youjustcan’tmaltyMelBilligan.Heistoointellectual.He’ddestroyyourimage.’’Onlywhentheyceasedtobestarsdidsomeofthemdiscoverthattheyweregoodactors!MoviestarslikeBettyDavis,KatherineHepburn,SpencerTracyandJamesMasongavedistinguishedperformancesincharacterpartsaswellasleadingroles.Hollywoodisnolongertheheartoftheworld’Smotionpicturein—dustry.Mostmoviestodayarefilmedonlocation,thatistosay,inthecit—ies,inthecountryside,andinanypartoftheworldthatthescriptde—mands.TheHollywoodstudiosarestillstanding,butmostofthemhavebeenleasedtotelevisionnetworks.About80%ofallAmericanTVenter-tainmentcomesfromHollywood.YetHollywoodhasnotlostallitsglamor.Moviestarsstilllivethere,orinneighboringBeverleyHills,andSOdomanyofthefamousandwealthypeoplewhohavemadetheirhomesinsouthernCalifornia.ThereisalsotheattractiveHollywoodBowl,thehugeoutdooramphithea—terwhereeverysummersince1922“SymphoniesundertheStars”areplayedbyAmerica’Sbestorchestrasbeforepackedaudiences.Hollywood,aboveall,hastheglamorofthepast.Itisanamewhichwillalwaysbeassociatedwithmotionpicture—making,andformanyyearstocometheoldHollywoodmovieswillbeshownagainandagainnmovieshousesandontelevisionscreensallovertheworld
