Geologist. Born in Changchun， Jilin Province. Graduated from the Department of Earth Sciences. Southwest Associated University， Kunming in 1942. Received Ph.D. from the University of Edinburgh， UK in 1948. Professor， Peking University and Geoscience University， deputy director and director， Institute of Geology， and deputy directory， State Seismological Bureau.
In 1956， he and his students carried out Wutai Mountains regional geological survey on the scale of 1：200，000 which was the first of its kind in that period. As the work going on， he concentrated on the studies of the Precambrian geology， regional tectonics and seismo-tectonics. He stressed gravity instability and density inhomogeneity in the initiation tectonic and seismic processes. He put forward many distinct opinions and realization on intracontinental seismotectonics and seismicity of China， especially on the relationship between rift faulting and earthquakes.
He was elected Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1980.

固體力學與地球動力學家。浙江吳興人。1943年畢業於昆明西南聯合大學航空工程係。1953年獲美國布朗大學應用數學不哲學博士學位。北京大學力學係教授，1986年～1991年間任國家自然科學基金委員會副主任。致力於固體力學和地球動力學方麵的研究，特別是在壓力加工塑性分析和理論、結構的塑性分析和動力響應及動力穩定性，全球和區域構造應力場分析和地震遷移規律的數學力學模擬等方麵做出了創新性成果，並對力學與地質學、地震學的研究結合做出了貢獻。1980年當選為中國科學院院士（學部委員）。
