Inmyview,theemergenceoflesbianandgayplannedparenthoodrepresentsagenuinefamilyrevolutionandepitomizesthecharacterofthepostmodernfamilycondition.Openlylesbianandgaymenwhochooseparenthoodmakestarklyvisibletheworldhistoricreconfigurationoftherelationshipbetweensexualityandthefamilythathasbeentakingplaceintheeraofglobalization.Theychallengeandmultiplyconventionaldefinitionsofmother,father,andparentaswellastraditionalrelationshipsbetweensexuality,gender,marriage,procreation,andparenting.SomelesbiansandgaymenexperimentwithvanguardpossibilitiesofAssistedReproductiveTechnology(ART),suchaslesbianswhoexchangeovatoseparateandrecombinegestationalandgeneticdefinitionsofmotherhood,orgaymalecoupleswhotaketurnsinseminatingeggsfromthesamedonorsothatchildrenborntothemthroughsurrogacywillbegenetichalf-siblings.Becausehiredsurrogacyissorestricted,expensive,anddifficult,however,mostgaymenwhoseekparenthoodintheUSAadopttheirchildren,andthechildrenavailabletothemaremorelikelytobefromdifferentracial,ethnic,ornationaloriginsthanistrueforotheradoptiveparents.Heretoo,gayparentingchallengesconventionalexpectationsoffamilyhomogeneity.
