Butgrowingnumbersofgaypeopletookthisriskbecausetheyfoundittobeanunbearableaffronttotheirhumandignityandintegritytoconcealthisimportantpartoftheirlivesfromotherpeople.Theywerealsodeterminedtohavetheirgayrelationshipstreatedequallyandtoseethemrespectedinthesamewaythatamarriageorotherheterosexualrelationshipwouldbe.Asahistoricalmatter,theirdecisiontocomeoutwasreinforcedandeveninspiredbybroaderculturalchangesinideasabouttheboundarybetweenpublicandprivatelife,andtheemergenceofanewmoralityofpersonalhonestythatwasembracedbymanypeopleoftheirgeneration,notjustgaypeople.
By1985,oneinfourAmericanshadafriendoracquaintancewhohadtoldthemtheyweregay,althoughmorethanhalfofAmericansstillbelievedtheydidnotknowanyonegay.Overthenextfifteenyears,however,manymoregaypeoplestartedtalkingwiththeirheterosexualfriends,andbytheyear2000,fullythree-quartersofAmericansrealizedtheyknewsomeonegay.
