GovernmentleadersbegantoattackgaypeopleasathreattoAmericansocietyandtoclaimthattheywereunreliableorevenuntrustworthy,especiallyascivilservants.In1950,acommitteeoftheUnitedStatesSenatecitedsuchreasonswhenitrecommendedthathomosexualsbebannedfromgovernmentemployment,civilianaswellasmilitary,andthousandsofgaypeopleandpeoplesuspectedofbeinggaylosttheirgovernmentjobsasaresult.Thegovernmentalsopassedlawsprohibitingrestaurants,bars,andcabaretsfromservinghomosexuals,andinmanycities,thepolicebeganarrestinglargenumbersofgaypeopleandshuttingdowntheplaceswheretheygathered.
Thenewwaveofdiscriminatorylawsandregulationsputgaypeopleinadifficultposition.Antigaygovernmentpoliciesforcedgaypeopletohidetheirhomosexualityinordertoprotecttheirlivelihoodsandsocialrespect,butthefactthattheyconcealedsomethingsoimportantaboutthemselvesmadethemseemsecretive,untrustworthy,anddangeroustooutsiders.
