A drop fell on the apple tree，
Another on the roof；
A half a dozen kissed the eaves[屋簷]，
And made the gables[山形牆] laugh.
A few went out to help the brook[小溪]，
That went to help the sea.
Myself conjectured[猜想]， Were they pearls，
What necklaces could be！
The dust replaced in hoisted[升起] roads，
The birds jocoser注 sung；
The sunshine threw his hat away，

本詩出自美國傳奇女詩人艾米莉·狄金森（1830—1886）之手，描寫的是夏日驟雨將塵埃、水珠和植物通通帶走，讓雨水重新彙入大海的景象。
狄金森從25歲開始棄絕社交，閉門不出，在孤獨中埋頭寫詩三十年，留下詩稿一千七百餘首，但基本上都是在她死後才出版的。狄金森的詩主要以自然、生命、信仰、友誼、愛情為題材，詩風凝練婉約、意向清新，思想深沉、凝聚力強，常置格律乃至語法於不顧。
