Millions of Americans are still looking for work, and with the new year comes a new ranking of America’s best and worst jobs to have in 2010. And I’ll bet that the job titles at both ends of the list might surprise you. According to CareerCast.com the best job to have this year is an 1)actuary. Now what exactly do actuaries do? Well, they evaluate financial risk for insurance companies, the government, and consulting firms. They make about $85,000 a year and they’re in high demand. Computer-related jobs come in second and third—software engineer and computer systems 2)analyst. Biologist is next, bringing in more than 70 3)grand a year on average. And historian rounds out the top five with income of more than $60,000 a year.

Now, these rankings are based on more than just income. CareerCast.com rates actuary the highest because the job causes little stress, the working environment is good, physical demands are low, and it has a good pay and also a positive hiring outlook. The highest paying job, a surgeon, ranked toward the bottom of the list because it received poor evaluations on the other criteria.
